1 in 54 children in the US has autism, yet many education programs lack the proper technology and resources for support due to a lack of funding. Additionally, low academic or social expectations and social stigmas toward the autistic community negatively impact education and daily life. Funding and individualized education programs can be implemented to accommodate autistic childrens’ needs and create a better-suited environment, as well as having the student's voice heard.
Voices on the Spectrum is a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) status that raises money to provide virtual reality technology to kids with autism, helping improve special education. This technology helps them work through challenging virtual reality social situations to effectively communicate their thoughts and feelings. To do this, we purchase virtual reality technology to donate to schools, where they can be utilized by autistic children to ultimately improve their daily lives. Our most important goal is to amplify autistic voices and dismantle stereotypes.
Voices on the Spectrum took shape slowly, forming through the ideas shared on multiple walks around our neighborhood. Once we had an idea of where we wanted to go with this, we researched, contacted other organizations, and researched some more. We developed a process to achieve our goal of providing resources to special education programs. We are passionate about this project and hope to have a positive impact!
